Lifespan is a system
Material matters, but so do edge sealing, primer, paint compatibility, cure time, hardware, drainage and maintenance. Weakness in one part of the system can shorten the life of the entire sign.
Sun and heat
Ultraviolet exposure fades coatings and heats dark surfaces. Temperature cycling causes expansion and contraction that stress paint films, seams and mounting points.
Water exposure
Standing water and repeated wetting are more damaging than occasional rain. Signs should be mounted so water can drain and air can circulate rather than being trapped against the back.
